I continue to explore several forms of ministry: urban ministry to serve the physical and emotional needs of the disenfranchised and wounded and academic writing to advocate for the spiritual transformation of society.

Garrett has given me a chance to perform acts of Christian mission where they are most needed and match the gifts God has given me. The Scottish missionary and Arabic scholar John Keith Falconer wrote, “I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light.” A recent gift came from my summer field education experience in Scotland, where I worked at food banks and an English conversation café with the disenfranchised, isolated, and wounded. I met, problem-solved, and prayed with asylum seekers from Senegal, Sudan, and Syria, addicts, jobless, working poor, victims of domestic violence, and those under long-term treatment for mental afflictions.

My academic interests focus on the question: How can one believe that God acts in the world, given the understanding that contemporary science has given us? I propose that divine action occurs through human hands. I am completing a monograph this fall (2024): "Talking with God: Prayer, Imagination, and Inspiration in the Age of Neuroscience." My research is at the intersection of science and religion, particularly psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and theology. I am fascinated by the role of language in molding what we believe, what we imagine, and what inspires us. I have proposed a model to explain the role of language in enabling inspiration, called the Language-Enabled Inspiration Model, based on a contemporary understanding of brain architecture. LEIM serves as a conduit for divine action.
