2008 SUMMER CONFERENCE
Methods and Measures for Communication and Cognition Research
Thursday, July 10 – Sunday, July 13, 2008
Inn & Conference Center, College Park, Maryland
Methods for studying the cognitive activity of communicators are rapidly changing. Technological advances and cutting-edge statistical methods are now available for studying cognitive processes, yet communication scholars are only beginning to become familiar with and make use of these advances. The purpose of this conference is to provide an opportunity to become familiar with these advances by having scholars present and demonstrate the latest developments in technology and statistical methods, introducing researchers to new possibilities for studying social cognition and communication.
Among the featured topics and speakers are the following:
-Content analysis with brain imaging techniques. Ron Tamborini (Michigan State University) & René Weber (University of California at Santa Barbara)
-Analysis of textual data: Machine learning and intelligent inference. Dan Roth (University of Illinois)
-Video structural and information complexity. Annie Lang (Indiana University)
-Network analysis for the measurement and analysis of cognitive processes. George Barnett (University at Buffalo)
-The Implicit Association Test (IAT). Claude Miller (University of Oklahoma)
-Reaction time measures. David Roskos-Ewoldsen (University of Alabama)
Call for Abstracts & Papers (deadline: January 11, 2008)
The conference will consist of four types of sessions. First, experts in technology and methodology for studying communication and cognition will lecture on these approaches. Second, researchers experienced in the use of sophisticated analytic techniques will present workshops demonstrating these methods. Third, high density paper session(s) will be offered for competitive submissions by conference participants. Fourth, there will be a plenary session on Friday evening. Competitive submissions may be either full papers or extended abstracts. Invitations for inclusion in the high density session(s) will be made by mid-February, 2008. Submit papers and abstracts by e-mail, in MSWord or RTF format, to Professor Craig R. Hullett at hullett@email.arizona.edu no later than January 11, 2008.
