Colleagues:
Because of overwhelming response to the "Dear Colleague" letter regarding "Building the Science of Science Policy" (NSF 06-28), the National Science Foundation has withdrawn the letter. This action was necessary because of the significant interest in this topic and the lessons learned from recent workshops that have been held on the science of science policy.
In order to ensure that the highest-quality science related to this topic is supported, NSF intends to issue a solicitation inviting proposals. That solicitation is expected to appear during the fall of 2006.
We are sorry for any inconvenience that may have resulted from the earlier distribution of the Dear Colleague letter. NSF remains committed to support a broad range of high-quality scientific activities related to building the science of science policy, and it encourages researchers to think about projects that will enhance basic theoretical understanding and have a broad range of practical application in anticipation of the appearance of a formal solicitation later this year.
