Dear Colleagues,
We wanted to bring to your attention a new Program Solicitation from NSF, NSF 15-523, "Resource Implementations for Data Intensive Research in the Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences " (RIDR). http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2015/nsf15523/nsf15523.htm#toc
SBE realizes that large scale, easily usable data bases can play a significant research role and the purpose of the competition is to make them readily available. Successful applicants will produce a “finished product” – either centered around a new/improved technique with links to an existing data base(s) or a database itself in a form and with tools which make it readily useable by researchers. The database should be large and of interest to a broad intellectual range of potential users with a focus (although not necessarily an exclusive focus) on SBE areas of science. Data bases need not necessarily be new and could, for example amalgamate several extant ones.
SBE anticipates making available $3M – 4.5M for the competition and it is expected that there will be between 2 to 4 awards. Thus award sizes will be substantial. The submission deadline is February 23, 2015.

Also, as you may know, a number of federal agencies including NSF have activities related to President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative (e.g., NSF 14-611, NSF 14-125, NSF 14-126). We would like to pass along information on five recent RFAs from NIH that could be relevant to some social neuroscience researchers:
* BRAIN Initiative: New Technologies and Novel Approaches for Large-Scale Recording and Modulation in the Nervous System (U01) (RFA-NS-15-03) <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-15-003.html>
* BRAIN Initiative: Integrated Approaches to Understanding Circuit Function in the Nervous System (U01) (RFA-NS-15-005)<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-15-005.html>
* BRAIN Initiative: Optimization of Transformative Technologies for Large Scale Recording and Modulation in the Nervous System (U01) (RFA-NS-15-004) <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-15-004.html>
Each of the above, respectively, will support: proof-of-concept testing and development of new technologies; technologies and approaches that address major challenges associated with recording/manipulating neural activity at or near cellular resolution in the brain; and integration of experimental, analytic, and theoretical capabilities for large-scale analysis of neural systems.
