Inequality and Violence: Development, Perpetuation and Change
14/15 June 2012, University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL)
Inequality is present in all societies and how much it violates fairness has always been in the centre of ideological debate. Inequality can be legitimate in many domains, but often it is established and perpetuated by indoctrination and coercion. Power and social influence are key processes in the maintenance of inequality, including socio-normative processes and violence in socialization, everyday interaction and public discourse. At the same time, they also play a key role in social change, fostering new constellations of equality or inequality within and between societies. This conference intends to bring together research on the psychological underpinnings of the development and perpetuation of inequality and violence in human relations on the one hand and their societal change on the other hand.
This conference also aims to give tribute to the scientific work of Maria Benedicta Monteiro, one of the founding mothers of social psychology in Portugal, who has dedicated her research, precisely to the study of inequality and violence. She retired last summer after having influenced generations of students and practitionersin Portugal, and has contributed to turning Lisbon into an international reference for social psychological research.
This conference will take place at ISCTE-IUL in Lisbon on the 14-15th of June 2012 in the form of a two-day workshop without parallel sessions. We invite empirical and theoretical contributions to the understanding of psychological processes involved in the development, perpetuation and change of inequality and violence, which can be presented either as a poster or as an oral presentation. To allow for thorough discussion, for each oral presentation a timeslot of 45 minutes will be reserved. Conference fee to cover the lunch expenses will be 30 Euros.
