Querido Felipe:

As an undergraduate in México preparing for my Advanced GRE, I studied from a textbook by a certain Phil Zimbardo, so I must thank you for helping me even without knowing it!

At Stanford, bastion of egocentricity, you stood out by your unpretentiousness, willingness to hear and help anybody, and the contagious nature of your interests and smile.

Gracias y un enorme abrazo en tu jubilación, Phil.

Dear Z:

Congratulations on your retirement! When I found out about the website, I immediately wanted to send you a quick note to express my sincere gratitude for all that you have done for me. You will continue to be my professional role model and source of intellectual inspiration. As always, I look forward to our paths crossing, since every time I am around you, something good seems to happen to me. I am truly blessed to know you and be able to call you “amico mio.”

Warmest regards,
Bernie

You have done an exemplary job in keeping psychology in the public eye.

Best wishes for your retirement. You may be retired, but for sure not inactive.

Dear Phil,

You have made, and continue to make, a positive difference in the world. What could be more important than that?

Best wishes from our whole family, Lyn, Chris, Kim and Kevin.

Dear Phil,

I'm sorry that we are going to miss your big celebration. I have no doubt that it's going to be great fun. I will look forward to watching you develop the Zimbardo approach to "retirement" -- that's going to be really interesting...

In all seriousness, I wish you the very, very best in this new stage of life.

Love,

On his retirement, I'd like to offer Phil a word of thanks – both for his instruction on how to be a professional back when I was a grad student, and for his treating me and all students as professionals and colleagues during our student days and beyond.

Hi Phil!

It's a surprise to hear about your retirement -- you never seem to stop working, & I'm sure you won't...

Anyway, just want to wish you a very happy retirement.

Remember all the hot-pot dinners, sushi bar meals, dim-sum lunches... & tailor-made suits last time when you visited us? That was fun... & it seems like yesterday...

Dear Phil,

I want to add my good wishes on your retirement. As you pass this milestone, you can be proud of all that you have accomplished in your career. And one of those accomplishments has been to be president of APA. I think the importance of the APA presidency is not just for the sake of adding another star on your c.v., but more importantly, because of the opportunities it has given you to spread your ideas further and have more influence. I am thinking of things like your “Psychology Makes a Difference.” Indeed it does, and so have you!

The other good part of this occasion is that I am sure that this will not end your contributions to psychology, but perhaps change the direction somewhat as you have the time to embark in new directions. I hope that we will not envision you in only “sitting and fishing” activities, but in more new and exciting projects. Keep up the good work.

Fondly,

Hi Phil,

Sorry I can't be there to join in the celebration, but I will be there in spirit, remembering all the wonderful work you have done. I hope your retirement will be an active one.

You're the best!
