Cross-National Multi-Lab Validation of the Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Lobby Conspiracies (GILC) Scale
This project seeks to validate the 9-item GILC scale across countries representing all continents. Citation: Salvati, M., Pellegrini, V., De Cristofaro, V., & Giacomantonio, M. (2024). What is hiding behind the rainbow plot? The gender ideology and LGBTQ+ lobby conspiracies (GILC) scale. British Journal of Social Psychology, 63, 295–318. https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12678
The scale measures belief in conspiracy theories portraying LGBTQ+ people as a powerful and threatening societal “lobby” (α = .97). The cross-national survey also includes additional socio-psychological and political measures to examine the broader correlates of conspiracy thinking. Researchers from all world regions are welcome. We also encourage participation from underrepresented regions to ensure broad global representation.
We are looking for data collection collaborators who can:
• Collect data in their country (target N ≈ 400; university or community samples welcome),
• Translate the questionnaire into the local language (if needed),
• Obtain ethical approval in their institution/country, in case our institutional approval cannot be used by them.
Each national team may include up to three researchers, with one serving as the national coordinator.
How will authorship order be determined?
Authorship will be limited to 3 researchers per “team/site” (e.g., PI + PhD student + assistant). If a fourth person (from the same lab, department, or university of an existing team) wants to participate in the project, they will be considered a separate team and will be asked to collect additional data in order to be included as authors.
Author contributions will be reported on research products (e.g., investigation, project management, funding acquisition, etc.) using the CRediT taxonomy. In case of special circumstances regarding your team, please reach out to us at marco.salvati@univr.it.
How long will the survey be? The survey will be no longer than 15-20 minutes.
What’s the gain?
(1) A main paper to be submitted to a Q1 journal in psychological science.
(2) A data paper to be submitted to an ad hoc journal (e.g., Nature Scientific Data, Data in brief etc…).
(3) Each national unit will be allowed to add additional scales (up to 2/3) at the end of the original common questionnaire to test hypotheses related to secondary papers. All secondary analyses must be planned in advance and pre-registered (e.g., on OSF – Open Science Framework) by the national units.
Those interested in joining are kindly asked to complete the Collaboration Agreement survey (which includes further information about the project, authorship guidelines and responsibilities):

We look forward to working with you on this collaborative project!
