RE: Invitation to the 1st Conference on Social Psychology in Ireland (C-SPI)
Dear Colleagues,
In the last 10-15 years the interest in social psychological research has received tremendous attention worldwide, in and outside of academia. The combination of basic psychological processes with contextual and social reality has resulted in creative and inspiring research and in applications for social change. The success of our field is reflected in increasing funding by governmental and private research organizations and in an increasing amount of social psychologists in academia, governmental organizations, and companies. Indeed the development of our Department of Psychology committed to the field of Social Psychology at the University of Limerick (UL) can be seen as a direct result of these developments.
Importantly, social psychological research is a broad field, ranging from intra-individual processes to inter-group dynamics, and it includes many different areas of social life such as interpersonal and intergroup behaviour, attitude change, conflict resolution, collective action and much more. In the spirit of explaining social phenomena and discussing implications for social change we invite all psychologists and psychology students to the first conference on social psychology in Ireland. We believe this conference is a timely opportunity to come together in order to exchange research ideas and get to know each other better.
To this end we are planning a conference every alternate year in the Spring semester at UL. It could take on the character of a small group meeting with a theme around a particular issue every year. For this years event we have invited two eminent keynote speakers. We are delighted to announce that this year Professor Stephen Reicher (St. Andrews University) and Professor Constantine Sedikides (University of Southampton) have agreed to address our meeting. Our theme for this year’s conference is ‘Self and Identity Processes in Context’.
We want to encourage you to join us for this conference and we encourage you to give a presentation, whether it is an oral presentation (20 min & 5 min discussion) or a poster presentation. We would also like you to encourage your visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduate students to attend the conference and to give presentations. Proposals for oral presentations will be reviewed and organized into themes.
The conference will be held on Thursday, May 28th, and on Friday, May 29th, at the University of Limerick. Throughout the conference we will offer snacks, coffee, soft drinks, & wine in exchange for a low conference fee. Specifically, the fees are:
EUR 25,- for each faculty member
EUR 20,- for visiting scholars & postdoctoral researchers
EUR 10,- for students (postgraduates & undergraduates)
After the event, late afternoon on Friday, visitors are welcome to participate in a walking tour in the nearby lakeside village of Killaloe (Co. Clare) followed by a casual dinner.
Attendance: If you plan to attend the conference, please send an email by April 10, 16:00 to: Sharon.Barrett@ul.ie, with “C-SPI” in the subject line of your email. Fees will be paid onsite.
